What's new in TrueWind
Open the appYou have version .
Nov 7
- Live wind sooner. The app opens straight onto the last readings and forecast it saw, then tops them up. On a slow connection, live wind shows about a second sooner than before.
- New readings as they're posted. The app learns when each station posts and checks just then, so a new reading usually shows within 30 seconds instead of up to 7 minutes.
- Honest freshness. The readout says when readings are late ("none since 12:06 PM, usually every 6 min"), when you're offline, or when it's checking.
- Which model is tracking. On wider screens the chart's key shows whether each model has run over or under over the last 3 hours, for wind and gusts. The ★ goes to the closest one.
- Kiosk: in landscape, the compass and speed now sit over the graph, as in portrait. NWS warnings (tornado, thunderstorm, gale and the like) show beside the compass. A new setting shades the models' range for the next 2 hours on the graph.
- Pull to refresh just gets the latest readings. ↻ still reloads everything.
- No more wind strip sliding down from the top when you scroll; it covered the alerts.
- Lighter: about a third fewer requests when the app starts, and each part refreshes only as often as its source changes.
Nov 2
- Direction history. Tap the compass to see the last four hours of wind direction, newest at the top, colored from the lightest wind to the strongest. It shows the whole compass, or zoom in to see small shifts. The furthest swings either way are marked.
- Direction trend reads like "↻ 35° since 10:45 AM" over the three hours the compass shows, says when it has settled or is coming back, and says "light and variable" when the wind is too light to tell.
- Pressure trend in words, such as rising slowly or falling quickly. A fast fall shows in red: a front or storm is likely.
- Airport spots show their own temperature, dew point and pressure.
- The Accuracy page works for airport and buoy spots, and opens on Yesterday.
- A tidier readout: an N on the compass, the wind words just above the speed trend, and an ordinary hour's gusts get no word.
- Arrows always point the way the wind blows; the setting for it is gone.
- Lighter and faster, with less data on each refresh.
- Fixes for the rain line, the daily forecast and switching spots.
Oct 29
- New wind words. Gusts are smooth, typical, gusty or punchy, and lulls means the wind keeps dropping out. Gusty, punchy and lulls are red. These replace consistent, variable, holey and the stable / unsettled score.
- Direction reads "direction steady", "↻ north since 12:40 PM" (the point the wind is turning toward) or "↺ jumped west at 1:12 PM". If it's swinging back and forth, tap it to see by how much.
- Speed trend looks back three hours when the last hour has been steady, so a slow fade still shows.
- A cleaner readout, laid out like the kiosk, with the direction inside the compass. The wind history rings on the compass are now a setting, off to start with.
- Phones show a row of readings. Computers show the tiles three across beside the readout.
- Model forecast chart: a key with Hide all / Show all, and a ⋯ menu for chart options such as model gusts.
- This page. Tap the version at the bottom of the app to see what's changed.
Oct 27
- Wind quality words. Next to the speed trend, the readout says how the wind is behaving over the last hour: smooth or gusty, consistent, variable or holey, and stable or unsettled. Warning words are red. Tap them to see the numbers behind them.
- Rain from radar. A line under the readout says whether rain is on radar at your spot or heading for it. Tap it for the radar loop. The kiosk shows the same line.
- Speed trend reads like "↑ 9 since 11:12 AM", measured from the furthest point in the last hour.
- Search and Nearby cover every network: NOAA Tides & Currents, airports, NDBC buoys and Windy stations, all at once.
Oct 25
- TrueWind moved to truewind.cc. The old address shows a bar that carries your spots and settings over.
- New defaults: arrows point with the wind, and the AIFS, ICON, GEM and ARPEGE models start unchecked. The Accuracy page still scores them.
- Suggestions or issues? The footer has a button to email them.
Oct 23
- Kiosk mode. The current wind on one screen, from the kiosk button in the top bar. It refreshes itself and keeps the screen on.
- Live wind from more stations: airports, NDBC buoys and Windy stations as well as NOAA's.
- Your spots and settings are backed up and come back if iOS clears the app's storage.
- Faster loading and steadier refreshes on a slow or failing connection.
- Times are in the spot's own time zone, with a note when it isn't your phone's.
- Charts: an ideal-wind band, the observed chart opening an hour before sunrise, and an arrow on every reading.
- Compass: a weathervane option, hour rings newest on the inside, and a north marker.
- Accuracy page: gust errors, a Yesterday window, and fuller explanations.
- Card explanations open by tapping the card's title.
- App status page (in the footer) for working out what's wrong when the app won't load.
